Lent Challenge Day 31

Day 31: I hope you all are watching conference! So far tonight we learned that one of our apostles may or may not have considered hijacking Air-force One (he'll never tell), Jabari Parker was quoted by the prophet (He may have chosen dook, but this is testimony to me that he must be ok), but more importantly I have been struck by how often the atonement of Christ has been brought up in each of the various topics that have been discussed. We have been reminded that the atonement is more than a payment for our sins and a chance for forgiveness, but it is there to give us the strength, power, and courage to over come the desires of the flesh and become the Christians who we strive to be. What a wonderful reminder as we approach Easter.

If you want to watch what has already been said or what will be said tomorrow between 12-2 or 4-6 then go here: https://www.lds.org/general-conference/watch?lang=eng

I hope you watch it. This is seriously one of my favorite times of the year. I always feel empowered to go out and be the very best that I can be after hearing from these inspired men and women. #40daysoftruth#LentChallenge2014
Made this little quote tonight, in case anyone wanted a little more uplifting to their weekend! http://www.thehappyflammily.com/2014/04/a-spiritual-thought.html

Day 31: Why do I listen to General Conference? Each of us is entitled to personal revelation from the Lord. Maybe, just maybe, there will be one line that will be just for me, spoken straight to my heart. I listen in hope that I can improve my self in any tiny way.

Honestly, it's never been a "maybe" but an "always". There has always been at least one line that has helped to improve my life in some way.

Day 31: Ask and you will receive. Knock and it will be opened to you.

For the next ten days I am going to share what I have learned about revelation. Today's post is just a basic introduction.

First of all, incase you all did not know, I am a Mormon. My religious tradition is based on the belief of continuing revelation. Joseph Smith, the founder of the modern church (I believe this is Christ's restored church, so Christ is the actual founder) was a young fourteen year old boy who had a question.

He asked his family, he asked his local preachers, he searched the scriptures, no one could give him a satisfactory answer to his question. People gave him some answers, but none of the answers fully answered his question.

One day while reading in the epistle of James, Joseph Smith came across the first chapter verse four. The verse stated "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth (or censures) not; and it shall be given him."

Joseph shared when he read this scripture he felt as if the scripture were speaking directly to him. For he certainly lacked wisdom. He determined to ask God his question.

He went to a secluded section of woods near his home, and said his first spoken prayer while kneeling in the grove of trees. He asked God his question concerning what direction he should follow concerning his religious life.

Midway through his prayer. He had the following experience as stated from his own words.

"I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me...When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!"

The fourteen year old boy, saw God the Father, and Jesus Christ. He talked with them, they answered his question. They told him that Christ's church was not yet on the earth, that he should not affiliate with any church at this time.

Joseph left that grove of trees with a sure knowledge that God was real, He did answer prayers, and He was willing to reveal Himself to His children. Joseph through time would learn and grow, and eventual restore Christ's church on the earth. Joseph Smith became a prophet.

But all of the doctrines of this church rest on Joseph's first experience. Everything that is taught, everything that members believe and do, they are all invited to ask of God if it be true. To ask and get your own answer.

I believe in prophets and apostles, but they are not my sole source of truth. My personal prayer, and the personal thoughts and whispers I feel from God are the source of my truths. I have asked God my questions, and He has answered them. I have not seen God, I am not a prophet, but I do receive revelation.

I know God listens and He answers. You just have to ask him your questions and listen for His answer.
