Lent Challenge Day 29

Day 28-29: I realize I skipped yesterday.  Sorry, bad day. However I have also realized that this 40 days til Easter thing is all wacked out. We have 19 days until Easter... which means I'm going to end up posting not for 40 days but for 48 days. Either Google lied to me about when Ash Wednesday was, or my calendar is lying to me about when Easter is... or I misunderstood how long Lent was or how it works. Ann Barrow Bradley and Jenny Barrow have you all realized this? Can someone PLEASE explain what is going on?

Anyway, since I missed a day I'm going to take the time to sit down and actually take the time and thought to really share something. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints aka Mormons believe that their church is the *restored* church of Jesus Christ. We believe that we are led by the same power and authority that Christ and His apostles held while on Earth and the same power they used to bless and teach the gospel of Christ; the same power that connected them with God and His Word. We believe that prophets and apostles are an important and necessary part of this gospel who hold the complete power of the priesthood and the ability to receive revelation from God for His church. As they were slowly killed off so was the world's connection to that power. While truth had been taught and many good people continued to live as good Christians, we believe that during this period much of that truth became misunderstood, mistranslated, ignored, or forgotten. There were many good men who continued to seek for complete truth and to return to Christ's church, but none of them were able to reconnect to that channel of truth and revelation through the authority of the priesthood... That is until a young boy of 14 decided to pray to God for understanding and knowledge as to which church was the true church of God. That was our founder Joseph Smith our first prophet in these latter days. To Joseph Smith the priesthood was restored and so was the order of prophets on the Earth.

Haven't you ever wondered why God would stop giving us prophets? Where is our Moses and Noah? Some say that we don't need a prophet, just the Bible- I say, there are so many questions out there today that the Bible knows little about. There are also a lot of people who don't understand the Bible. The Bible is a sacred and wonderful book that is full of truth, but the Bible can't help us navigate this modern world alone. Prophets are important and have always been used by God. Today we have a prophet! Along with 12 Apostles! They are wise, they are kind, and I sincerely, truly, absolutely know that they are the servants of God. You have seen and heard many of the words they speak to us through these posts. I hope you have listened and felt the truth behind them. If you get anything from my posts I hope that you at least see that Mormon apostles and prophets speak sincere truths.
In D&C 1:38 God said:

"What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same."

Today our prophet is Thomas S. Monson. I hope, if just out of curiosity, you take a moment to listen to him and the apostles of our church this weekend. I know that you will feel their sincerity and the truth behind their words just as I do every spring and fall when we get to hear their counsel. I know that you will see the ways that God speaks through them. #40daysoftruth#nowait48?? #LentChallenge2014 #Morelikelentconfusion

Join Us for General Conference
An invitation for all individuals and families to the general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 6, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. MDT.

Day 29: This coming weekend I, along with the LDS membership world wide, will be watching our semi-annual General Conference. Its one of my favorite times of the year. The next week will be all about instruction and wisdom that I have gained (and will gain) from these meetings.

I believe in modern-day prophets. It doesn't seem fair to me that the people in scriptural times get to have instructions from the Lord and we don't. But we do. Heavenly Father is consistent in his plan and because the original gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored, we also have a prophet to speak to us on this earth.

Along with messages from our prophet, other church leadership will share messages of hope and inspiration. All are invited to listen. It's really easy to listen, later on I'll post a link for you, so even if you want to check it out for a minute, you'll be able to.

I mentioned a document earlier in my week on families: The Family: A Proclamation to the World. It was given to us by a prophet of God. So I will leave you with one last message about families as we enter this next week of preparing for and receiving instruction.

I like how this document highlights important parts of the document. I did not create it and it does have a water mark. I figure I'm not selling it, so it's ok to use.

The Family: A Proclamation to the World

Day 29: Temples provide an equal opportunity for all of God's children.

In the temple everyone wears white. This is symbolic of purity, but it also is symbolic of how we are all equal before God.

Temples are where God's plan for his children becomes fair and equal for all of His children. In the temples we do vicarious or proxy work for our deceased ancestors.

God has taught us that we need to make certain covenants and ordinances (like baptism) with Him while in the flesh before we can return back to His presence. If we fail to make these covenants, He can not forfeit the law. God is perfectly obedient.

But billions of people have lived on this earth without ever having the opportunity to make these covenants. How can a just God require us to make covenants here on earth, and then never even give some of His children the opportunity to make these covenants?

The work in the temple is God's merciful answer to this problem. People living on the earth now can take their family names to the temple, and they can perform the ordinances on their behalf.

This does not mean the deceased person is automatically baptized into Christ's church. All it means is should the person choose to accept Christ as their savior, the necessary baptism is already completed for them. The choice is still theirs. God will never take away our agency. The proxy baptism and other ordinance work just fulfills God's law of receiving the ordinance while in the flesh.

Temple work is a service to our deceased family. They can choose if they want to receive the service or not receive it. But once the service is done, that person now has an equal opportunity before God. I love this truth. The temple answers the question of how God can be consistent in His law yet still have mercy.

I also love how temple work gives me an opportunity to pay respect and thank all of my ancestors who came before me, their lives made my life possible. I am in debt to them. The simple service of temple work is a way of expressing gratitude to them for living, so I could live. I think it is a beautiful idea.
