Lent Challenge Day 20

Day 20: Hey Facebook! We are half way there!

Today has been long and I am exhausted. There are a lot of potential posts floating around in my head, but I'm afraid I'm too tired to do any of them real justice. So here is the one scripture that seems to keep popping up and that is adequate for how I feel right now:

"And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them." Ether 12:27

Again, it is from the Book of Mormon. I just want you all to know that this is a book of wisdom and truth. I've spoken before about one of the purposes of this life is to learn, grow, change- and to do that means that sometimes we have to be challenged and sometimes we have to even challenge ourselves. Life is not hard because there isn't a God. Life is hard because there is a God who loves us and who is shaping us into celestial beings. He gives us weaknesses, not so we can accept them and say "That's just who I am", but rather so that we can recognize our imperfections and change them. We were given weaknesses not only to humble us as children, but to also show us how they can be overcome as we learn to have faith in and rely on Christ.

Day 20: I saw a quote on here a little while ago, not sure from whom, but it went like this: If you live by principles your decisions are already made. Something like that.

The Book of Mormon is full of sustaining principles, or guidelines to live by. But, they aren't just listed and repeated over and over again. They are told through story. Through the experiences of people who lived on this American continent and made a record of it.

I have many favorite characters and stories to read in the BoM. When it comes down to it, I would have to pick King Benjamin as my favorite above all. He lived approximately 120 years before Christ's birth.

There are many unrighteous leaders in the BoM and they caused great destruction to come upon their people, and themselves. King Benjamin was not like that. He was a man that did not live above his people. He worked with them and taught them how to live by example more than word. He lived by righteous principles.

One of his great sermons (for I'm sure he had many) was recorded in the book of Mosiah. I love how direct he is in his speech. I love how he doesn't beat around the bush telling his people what they need to do to prosper and become happy. You can feel the love he had for his people when you read his words.

One of the teachings he is remembered best for is his encouragement to serve. Have you ever served someone and it seemed to brighten your day more than theirs? It's because "service" is a godly trait.

"..when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God." Mosiah 2:17

When you are in the service of God, you can't help but feel good about it.

King Benjamin encouraged his people to pray in gratitude, to keep the commandments, to study the scriptures, he bore witness to the coming of the savior Jesus Christ, he plead with them to repent and believe in God, he encouraged them to be diligent, and to put off "the natural man" or any ungodly traits.

Every word can be applied to us today. They are principles that will help guide our lives. I testify that if you simply live by the words of this wise prophet of old, you will prosper and be blessed. God is eager to bless us. He is just waiting for us to turn to Him.  Ann #40daysoftruth#LentChallenge2014

Day 20: Jesus Christ is our example for how to live, love, and return to our Heavenly Father.

This is my final day talking about the nature and characteristics of God. It is also the half way point for this little Lent Challenge. Since Lent is a preparation for Easter, and Easter is our holiday for remembering the sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus Christ, I feel todays post is a good hump day post.

Jesus Christ's purpose here on earth other than performing the Atonement (see Day 19), was to serve as an example to us. An example of how we should live our life. He is our perfect example. He is the way to follow.

This is one of my favorite children's hymns. I learned it as a child, but grew to love it more in Taiwan because the Chinese translation is more meaningful. In English the song emphasizes how the Father "Sent His Son". In Chinese the translation emphasizes how we should "Learn Like the Son." I will share the English words with you. Maybe another day I will give you the Chinese translation...not tonight. It is late.

He Sent His Son

How could the Father tell the world of love and tenderness?
He sent his Son, a newborn babe, with peace and holiness.
How could the Father show the world the pathway we should go?
He sent his Son to walk with men on earth, that we may know.
How could the Father tell the world of sacrifice, of death?
He sent his Son to die for us and rise with living breath.
What does the Father ask of us? What do the scriptures say?
Have faith, have hope, live like his Son, help others on their way.
What does he ask? Live like his Son.

Jesus Christ is our example of how to return back to our Heavenly Father. I know He is the way, He is our perfect teacher, our perfect example. And I know with His help, I can become more like Him everyday. That is my goal in life.
